If you haven't heard by now, Pantone always releases a colour of the year. This year, they have chosen Rose Quartz and Serenity, a soft gently-flushed pink and a dusty powder blue. Pantone explains that this years' colours "transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves". Now, we are faced with the task of throwing pink and blue all around our houses to make us feel wittier. I'm all for looking like the tiny plastic people in the Game of Life, but how do we go about doing that in a way that doesn't make our guests run from our house screaming? If you want to embrace this years' colours, I have a few tips for you:
1. Paint the walls in your bedroom Serenity to create a cozy getaway from the piles of dishes and baring TV. Blue is a shade that comforts us, and makes us feel calm and serene, as the name would suggest. This colour will also make spaces appear wider and airier. Painting a small powder room this light dusty blue opens it up and makes your water closet, a water house.
2. Pink is a hard colour to use in a room without making it feel feminine, or as if you've never repainted your childhood bedroom. Bring in small accents of Rose Quartz to a masculine room to soften and tone down the pink. Rose wall art above your oversized leather sofa will keep your room from being weighted down, or a soft pink throw and pillows will add a touch of colour to a neutral room without being overwhelming.
3. Mixing the two colours can seem impossible to those who are afraid of colour, but I promise it can be done without feeling like you're trapped in Candy Land. Choose one colour to use as your main accent, and throw in the second one here and there to keep your room from feeling boring. Use Serenity as your main colour for your walls or accents, and add a few splashes of Rose Quartz in decor such as pillows, or a vase, to break up the uniformity.
And for those like me, who live off colour, get your next sofa made in Serenity, or your headboard and duvet in Rose Quartz for some extra fun. I guarantee that adding these Pantone colours of the year will help lighten your home and make you feel more calm and happy. Bright colours bring optimism and excitement to your home, and us Winnipegers need some of that by the end of our winter.
